Glass Fiber Reinforced Engineering Plastic in Automobile Industry

The main function of engineering plastics for automobiles is to make cars lighter and lighter, so as to achieve high fuel economy. Applied plastics for the automotive industry including nylon PA, polyester PBT, polyoxymethylene POM, polycarbonate PC, polypropylene PP, and polyphenylene PPO ether.


Nylon is mainly used for automotive engine and engine peripheral parts, the main varieties are GFPA6, GFPA66, reinforced flame retardant PA6 and other products. Nylon has better comprehensive properties. The main properties of nylon modified with glass fiber have been greatly improved, such as strength, product accuracy, dimensional stability and so on. In addition, many varieties of nylon are easier to recycle and cheaper.

Mainly product: Intake manifold, Engine cover, engine decorative cover, cylinder head, Oil filters, wiper, radiator grille, etc.


PBT is widely used in the production of bumpers, carburetor assemblies, fenders, spoilers, spark plug terminals, fuel supply system parts, dashboards, automotive igniters, accelerators, and clutch pedals and other automotive parts. The water resistance of PBT is better than that of PA. The heat resistance of PBT is better than that of PC.


POM has the advantages of lightweight, high hardness, wear resistance, creep resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and so on. It is very suitable for manufacturing automotive pumps, carburetor components, oil pipelines, power valves, ten thousand knuckle bearings, motor gears, cranks, handles, dashboards, window lifts, switches, seat belt buckles, etc., especially slippery ones. Wear-resistant parts such as blocks are the strengths of modified POM. These parts wear less metal, reduce the amount of lubricant, and enhance the service life of the parts. POM+20%GF or POM+30%GF.


Modified PC has excellent heat resistance, impact resistance, rigidity, and good processing fluidity. It is mainly used in automotive exterior and interior decoration parts, instrument panel peripheral parts, antifreeze board, door handle, underflow board, bracket, steering column sheath, decorative board, air conditioning system accessories, lamp parts, and other automotive parts. 

How to produce the glass fiber reinforced engineering plastic?

Almost all of the glass fiber reinforced engineering plastic pellets made by the twin screw extruder with water cooling strand cutting system. If the glass fiber is packed in a roll(LGF), it can feed by the extruder exhaust port; If the glass fiber is short glass fiber(SGF), it can feed by the side force feeder. Reference video: LGF, SGF.
