The present invention relates to a method for desulfurizing a vulcanized rubber mixture, comprising the following steps: A) Providing or producing a vulcanized rubber compound; B) Pulverizing the vulcanized rubber compound into granular material composed of vulcanized rubber particles, wherein these particles have a maximum particle size of 100 mm; C) Extruding the vulcanized rubber particles produced in step B) in a twin-screw extruder at a shear rate less than 100 s⁻¹; wherein the temperature of said vulcanized rubber particles during extrusion is less than 200°C to obtain a desulfurized rubber compound having a temperature above 100°C, D) cooling said desulfurized rubber compound in a separate kneading unit to obtain a desulfurized rubber compound having a temperature within the range of 50°C to 100°C. The present invention further relates to equipment for performing the method and the use of said equipment for desulfurizing vulcanized rubber mixtures.
